Corporate Design: Verizon's "VZ" employee newspaper

One of the country’s largest communication organizations, Verizon has a large international employee base. VZ, the in-house newspaper, provides news in a solid journalistic way so that readers are informed of current policy, changes within the company, and the industry.

The publication looked more like a newsletter than a newspaper when we started working on the redesign. We changed the structure of the newsletter to look more like a newspaper by introducing Old Modern, a Bodoni-like headline type for headlines. It was created recently with maximum readability in mind.

Verizon Red remained the focus of the color palette, but used exclusively as a navigation device, applied to teasers and labels. Gray and black became two complementary color patterns to the Verizon red, allowing designers to highlight fact boxes and other elements that needed attention drawn to them. Sophisticated illustrations and photos replaced photos that carried little content.

In the end the publication was more newsy, more sophisticated and chock full of news that employees could use.
