Exhibit catalog for ‘Dalí and the Spanish Baroque’
Fall 2006
The Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida holds the third largest collection of Dalí’s work in the world. Its permanent collection is impressive and its exhibits are a highlight for tourists.
The exhibit, Dalí and the Spanish Baroque, highlighted the enormous influence that Baroque painters like El Greco had on Dalí and his work.
We created and designed the catalogue for the exhibit to echo the drama of Dalí and the excessiveness of the Baroque.
The catalogue type system was based on Baskerville, a typeface created during the time of Baroque. An elegant typeface, it presented the spirit of the time without getting in the way of the elaborate artwork. Flourishes appeared as surprise elements in the 120-page catalog to draw the eye and to enhance the content.
A four-column grid format allowed the text to be displayed in a generous size and width for ease of reading and allowed the artworks to be presented in maximum size.
The color palette contained muted tones of gold, blue and red, muted so not to stand out in front of the quite colorful artworks.
